The president of Mexico Andrés Manuel López Obrador invited his Argentine counterpart, Alberto Fernández to visit Mexico on February 24.

According to a letter signed by Zoé Robledo Aburto, the invitation was made on the instructions of the Mexican president. This occurs within the framework of the commemoration of the 200 years of the Consummation of the Independence of Mexico, in addition to other important events.

“The year 2021 is of great relevance for Mexico, since the 200 years of the Consummation of National Independence are commemorated, as well as 500 years of Indigenous Resistance and Seven Centuries of History of Mexico Tenochtitlán, for which 15 emblematic commemorations for the historical and cultural recognition of our nation ”, says the letter.

According to the invitation, next February 24 will have the second ceremony of 2021. This will celebrate the 200 years of the Promulgation of the Plan of Iguala or the Independence of North America and Fernández will not only attend as a guest, but as speaker of the event.

“In this context of great relevance for our country […] we allow ourselves to extend a cordial invitation to participate in this commemoration as a special guest and distinguished speaker, in view of the strong ties of collaboration and friendship between both countries and by virtue of the common historical aspects between our nations in the struggle for independence ”, the document concluded.

On his part, the Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE) of Mexico confirmed the assistance of the Argentine president through his Twitter account.

“The President of the Argentine Nation, Alberto Fernández, will participate as a special guest in the commemoration ceremony of Flag Day on February 24 at the invitation of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Argentina and Mexico together ”, wrote Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón.

This will be the Argentine’s second visit to Mexican soil, since the then president-elect visited Mexico in November 2019.

According to sources from the Mexican spokesperson, the meeting was held privately and without a formal ceremony. The two leaders touched on economic and commercial issues.

However, Latin American countries have been in close communication due to the issue of vaccines against COVID-19. Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, arrived in Argentina on January 14 with the aim of coordinating efforts for the production and packaging of the coronavirus vaccine (COVID-19) of the pharmaceutical company British AstraZeneca.
